Road Course Practice Wrap Up

Day one of practice for the Angie's List Grand Prix of Indianapolis is in the books and Scott Dixon has topped the charts with a quick time of 1:10:6971 (124.197mph). The time was just off Scott Dixon's quickest time from Day 1 last year clocking in a 1:10:4654.

The only incident of the day came just after 4pm in Turn 1 when Penske Racing's Juan Pablo Montoya and KVRT rookie Stefano Coletti made contact. The incident was slight, but a large enough rub between the two to send both off course and into a stall. They both quickly got back underway.

Two cars tested the new LED lit scoring panels on the side of their car, including 2013 Indianapolis 500 Champion Tony Kanaan and Andretti Autosport's Justin Wilson. Even in bright sunlight the red and sometimes blinking numbers could be seen clearly. Of course, with an extra 100mph behind them, it's still unclear how usable they'll be to the naked eye during the '500'. The system could be in place for the Indianapolis 500 practice, but could be delayed. Photos of the display can be seen below.

The 7-inch-tall by 8-inch-wide panel is just 3 millimeters thin, but weighs enough to increase the car minimum weight by 4 pounds. The requirement jumps to 1,574 pounds on superspeedways and 1,604 pounds on road/street/short oval races.

The re-scheduled Pro Mazda race which was rained out in New Orleans last month was ran in the late afternoon to wrap up the day's activities. Weiron Tan, who started P1, led all 15 laps to take the checkers.
