Aero Kit testing for the 99th Running of the Indianapolis 500 wrapped at 5pm with Penske Racing's Juan Pablo Montoya atop the charts. Montoya's quickest lap of 226.772mph was nearly 3mph quicker than the top speed on last year's opening day.
There were 1,845 laps turned today by 27 drivers. All drivers in the morning refresher and ROP session have completed enough phases to run all remaining practice sessions. Stefano Coletti will likely take his ROP session the morning of Indianapolis 500 opening practice, May 11th.
"This is the first time I have gone over 200 miles per hour," said Bryan Herta Autosport rookie Gabby Chaves. "It's very different. I thought it would be closer to what it was like in an Indy Lights car. When you're running 30 miles per hour faster than you have ever gone before, everything comes at you a lot quicker. That was the first thing I noticed, how quickly I am completing laps."
