Indianapolis 500 Practice Day 4

The somewhat mundane day at IMS took a turn for the worse when just after Happy Hour began the No. 21 car of Josef Newgarden made hard contact in Turn 1.

Newgarden was at the apex of the first turn when the car made a nearly 3/4 counterclockwise spin, contacting the SAFER Barrier with the nose cone. The car pivoted on the wall and redirected the rotation, making contact with the left side of his chassis. Rolling backwards along the wall, the car got into the air and flipped onto it's roll hoop, sliding through the short chute and resting on the inside of Turn 2. Newgarden exited from the car and made his way to the safety vehicle under his own power.

Newgarden was taken to the infield care center where he was checked, released and cleared to drive.

"It's still early for me, I am still trying to gather my thoughts from it," said Newgarden. "I got around pretty quick in Turn 1, it definitely surprised me. I am just lucky that everything is good, the Dallara tub held up pretty well. I want to get back with my crew and see what the damage is and see what we can do going forward."

The impact was so great I could hear and feel the Turn 1 contact on the south end of pit lane.

Following the crash, Newgarden's Carpenter Fisher Hartman Racing teammates of Ed Carpenter and JR Hildebrand were towed back to Gasoline Alley. Most of the other Chevy entries were brought back as well. Since the Bowtie car of Helio Castroneves took to the air yesterday, the Chevy entries were allowed by INDYCAR and required by Chevy to remove the front end wicker thought to aid in Castroneves' lift.

Earlier in the day, Buddy Lazier got his first laps on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. The laps came a bit later than had hoped due to having to deal with a few gremlins in the car. He turned just 10 laps, but is expected to be busy tomorrow.

Tristan Vautier filled in for James Davison who's racing a sports car event this weekend in Canada. Vautier will qualify the car and Davison will return to practice the car Monday and Carb Day before getting behind the wheel on Race Day.

Pippa Mann was unable to return to the track today after a late afternoon crash yesterday. The only spare tub owned by Dale Coyne Racing spent the day in a shop being repaired from a crash at Barber Motorsports Park in March. She's hopeful of a return tomorrow.

In total 1,995 laps were turned with 4 hours 42 minutes of green flag action.
