Schmidt Signs Howard To Drive Indy Entry

A month ago Tony Stewart and Schmidt Peterson Motorsports announced a partnership to run the No. 77 Team One Cure entry in May's Indianapolis 500. Today, Jay Howard was announced to drive the car.

"I can't begin to tell you how honored I am to have this opportunity," said Howard. "I'm not one to give up on a dream and I have every bit of determination to make this a successful effort for Tony, Team One Cure and Schmidt Peterson Motorsports. I'm in the best condition both mentally and physically, and my race craft is on point. We will be more than ready when IMS opens for practice this May."

Howard will be making his 4th attempt and if all goes well his 2nd Indianapolis 500 start.

The British driver was tabbed to drive for Roth Racing in 2008, but was replaced during practice by John Andretti.

In 2010 he was back at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, this time with Sarah Fisher Racing. On the bubble, the team withdrew his time to prevent another car from making an attempt. Unfortunately, his new time was too slow, failing to qualify for the 2nd time.

Sam Schmidt Motorsports gave Howard his 3rd attempt in 2011, this time he solidly made the field, starting in the middle of Row 7. He finished 30th.

In total, Howard has made 12 starts with 3 teams. His last IndyCar Series track time came at the 2011 season finale in Las Vegas.
