I'm the fan who was sitting in the North Vista Sec 45 Row G Seat 7 who received the stiches to the left side of the face (not forehead like I've seen reported). A two inch piece of carbon fiber hit me hard enough to knock me over (I'm a big dude at 245lbs and it felt like I was suckerpunched and taken off my feet) and lodge itself in my cheek. Thankfully it hit my cheek bone. It was a very scary moment and everyone is lucky it wasn't worse. One of the medics told me my eye glasses probably saved my eye...

The scariest part is thinking an inch or two in a different direction it could've been fatal (imagine if it hit my neck or I had been looking directly at the accident instead of towards turn 4 and taken it to the front of my face instead of the cheek.)

Thank you for reporting fans were injured. I have seen in multiple places that "no fans were injured" and heard nothing in the local media that anyone was hurt.

I love the race and LOVE IMS. I've got the IMS "bug" just as bad as all of you bloggers and read all these sites daily. The last thing I wanted was to let this scary situation tarnish what I view as my favorite time of year...

Wow, glad your OK, Corey! Thanks for posting.

The other things to note about the accident are that the engine apparently went through the catchfence, and that the stands were several feet above the joint of the top of the wall and bottom of catchfence, which isn't always the case. The car never got to the level of the stands.

From the photos that I've seen, the actual engine didn't go through the fence, however many parts including a tire did. As you noted, they were very lucky that it happened where it did due to the fact that at that point the stands are elevated unlike many other locations.

Thanks. It was a scary moment for sure.

You can see by the video the car never was in danger of going over the fence and when the car hit the fence the fence did exactly what it was designed to do:keep the car out of the stands.

Will this accident keep my wife and I from the track? No, not at all (although I doubt we'll sit that close to the fence in the north vista again). It's a freak accident and the odds of that happening again are very small.

I already can't wait until next year...
